A Prayer for Grief

A prayer for grief and loss. Bible verses and comfort for Christian women experiencing deep loss.

There is no right way to grieve. There is no timeline. If you are reading this with tears, you are exactly where God meets you most tenderly. This prayer is yours to keep — to come back to as many times as you need.

This prayer is rooted in John 11:35 — a Scripture promise that has carried Christian women through every season since it was first written.

“Jesus wept.”

— John 11:35

A Prayer for Grief

Father, I am brokenhearted. I am not going to pretend otherwise in Your presence — You see everything anyway. And right now what You see is grief. Real, heavy, unbearable grief.

Your Word says You are close to the brokenhearted and that You save those who are crushed in spirit. So I am calling on that promise right now. Come close. Not when I feel better — now.

I believe that weeping may last through the night, but that joy comes in the morning. I do not feel that morning yet. But I choose to believe it is coming.

Amen.

What Does the Bible Say About Grief?

The Bible does not tell us not to grieve — it tells us not to grieve as those who have no hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). God is not disturbed by your grief — He enters it with you. Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus.

4 Bible Verses to Pray When You Need Grief

1
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18

What this means for you: Notice it says the Lord IS close — present tense. Right now, in the exact place where your heart is broken, He is near.

2
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
— Revelation 21:4

What this means for you: God is personally going to wipe every tear from your eyes — not a distant God handing you tissues, but a Father who cups your face.

3
“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
— Psalm 30:5

What this means for you: God does not rush your grief. Weeping may STAY for the night. But morning comes.

4
“The Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles.”
— 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

What this means for you: God comforts you so that you can comfort others. Your grief has a purpose beyond yourself.

How to Walk Through Grief With God

Reading these scriptures is the first step. Praying through them is the second. But God invites us to live them — and that takes practice. Here is how to begin:

  1. Give yourself permission to grieve Grief does not mean weak faith. Jesus grieved. Let yourself feel it.
  2. Write a lament prayer Open a journal and write honestly — the anger, the confusion, the why. God can handle your rawest feelings.
  3. Let one safe person in Grief hidden is grief prolonged. Tell someone what you are carrying.
  4. Find one verse and hold it You do not need to read the whole Bible right now. Find one verse that reaches you and read it every day this week.

You Don't Have to Carry This Alone

Christian sister, whatever you are facing today — God hears every word of this prayer. Save this page. Come back to it. Pray it when you wake up and when you cannot sleep. God never grows tired of your asking.

And if this prayer ministered to you, share it with the woman beside you who needs it too. She may be praying the same prayer right now.
